A 15-minute walk from the Guggenheim Museum, Hotel Ercilla is a contemporary hotel with a killer location in the centre of Bilbao.
This once-industrial powerhouse on Spain's northeast coast is now being shaped by big-name designers and architects. Frank Gehry's striking Guggenhem Museum showcases rotating contemporary exhibitions, and Philippe Starck's Alhondiga Bilbao is a cultural and leisure centre housed in a 20th-century wine warehouse. Even the metro stations have been designed by Norman Foster. The pedestrianised old town is home to the 14th-century Santiago Cathedral and a large indoor market. Don't leave without sampling authentic pintxos (the Basque version of tapas) in one of the city's many bars.
The hotel's interior features modern artwork and striking sculptures, and a lobby bar dotted with Chesterfield sofas. Dine on dishes inspired by Basque cuisine at the Bermeo restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There's no spa but in-room massages and treatments can be arranged, and there's a small gym and wellness area.
All rooms overlook the city or a courtyard and have free high-speed Wi-Fi. Although the hotel's public spaces have a contemporary style, the room décor is more restrained with a grey-and-maroon colour scheme. The Le Club rooms include free bottled water, chocolates, a bathrobe and slippers, a Nespresso coffee machine and access to the Le Club area up on the rooftop.
