The URBN Shanghai is China’s first carbon-neutral hotel, housed within an upcycled warehouse. It may have green leanings, but there’s been no compromise on design. The lobby cleverly references the recycling theme with walls of reused brick and reclaimed hardwood floors, plus there’s a panel behind reception made from recycled leather suitcases. Environmental consciousness even extends to offsetting emissions from the lighting and staff commutes.
Its 26 bedrooms were revamped in 2014 by New York designer Jay Godfrey, and are spacious and tranquil. Each has a sunken lounge, free-standing bathtub, private bamboo garden and a big platform bed with an eco-friendly mattress made from coconut fibre.
The location is also spot on, just off a bustling local street in the Jing’an business district, close to Jing'An Temple and two blocks from the nearest subway station. No wonder Fodor's suggests that "discerning urbanites … shouldn’t bother staying anywhere else".
For dining, Downstairs restaurant serves health-conscious international fare with a local slant. A rooftop cocktail lounge, requiring a special entry code, has an exclusive ambience. Guests have access to a nearby gym, and the hotel itself offers innovative in-house programmes, such as Chinese cookery, calligraphy and tai chi.
