This Georgian property sits in 312 acres of landscaped gardens roamed by fallow deer and bounded on one side by the River Uck. Boasting four AA Red Stars for its high standards of hospitality, Buxted Park Hotel has hosted William Wordsworth, Winston Churchill and Marlon Brando.
There are several public areas where you can relax and enjoy your surroundings. The Coat of Arms Lounge and Crystal Bar have high ceilings, chandeliers and views across the parkland. They serve coffees and cocktails, elevenses and afternoon tea. There is also a 2-AA-Rosette fine-dining restaurant. We like the sound of the Buxted Park venison, the locally sourced Sussex lamb and the chef's 7-course taster menu. There are whisky- and wine-tasting evenings, and guests can sign up for cookery courses. The hotel has 44 carefully furnished bedrooms, many with garden views. Wi-Fi is free.
National Trust property Wakehurst Place -- which is managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew -- is a 30-minute drive away. It has pretty ornamental gardens and an Elizabethan mansion that is open throughout the winter. Bolney Vineyards and Hever Castle -- a 13th-century settlement, once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn -- are both within a 35-minute drive of the hotel. Bodiam Castle and Eastbourne are 45 minutes' drive away. The hilltop town of Rye, which is "often described as England's quaintest town… a little nugget of the past" (Lonely Planet), takes an hour by car.
