Condé Nast Traveller Johansens-recommended Talbot Hotel is a 17th-century inn that has been fetured in The Guardian, The Independent and The Daily Telegraph. The 17th-century inn is on the Fitzwilliam Estate and is on the outskirts of Malton, five minutes’ walk from the high street shops and the train station. The 17th-century inn is part of Castle Howard -- stately home and backdrop to 1980s TV saga "Brideshead Revisited" -- is 10 minutes away by car and the grounds and house are open most of the year for tours (March-December).

The restaurant, originally set up by British TV chef and local boy James Martin, has two AA Rosettes. Dan Graham is now head chef -- he previously worked for Michel Roux Jr at Le Gavroche. He's also appeared on "MasterChef: The Professionals". The succinct menu highlights local Yorkshire produce and "the flavours are special" according to Olive magazine.

The hotel’s landscaped gardens overlook the valley and provide farm-fresh produce for the restaurant. There's also a cosy bar for local bitter, or you can retire to the conservatory lounge for Yorkshire parkin cake and a cup of tea. Further afield, guests can go for a hike in the North York Moors National Park (10 miles away), attend the races in neighbouring York or join one of the local, world-class game shoots (a secure gun room is available on site).

Floral prints and quilted bedspreads decorate the country manor-style bedrooms, each of which is unique. Generally speaking, the higher the room type, the larger the bed. Bathrooms in the entry-level rooms have walk-in showers; upgrade for a bath tub. Most rooms are dog friendly (on request, extra charge applies) and blankets, bowls and chew treats are provided.

From the press:

  • "[The menu's] classic combinations have a delicate touch and a subtle modern style" -- The Michelin Guide 2016

  • "Set in its own beautifully landscaped grounds close to the historic market town" -- The AA Hotel Guide 2016
