The Crown is a 16th-century inn set in the hamlet of Playhatch, on the border between Oxfordshire and Berkshire. It has beamed ceilings, wing-backed chairs, log fires and plenty of rustic charm.
The hotel is a great base from which to explore the local area. The River Thames and Sonning -- described by writer Jerome K Jerome in his book Three Men in a Boat as "the most fairy-like little nook on the whole river" -- are a 5-minute drive away. It is also reported that George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin bought their first marital home there. Caversham Lakes, where you can follow a nature trail to see woodpeckers, foxes and rabbits, is nearby.
Henley-on-Thames, an attractive riverside town famous for its regatta, is 15 minutes' drive, while the charming town of Marlow is 30 minutes away, and the rolling hills of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are a 10-minute drive. Mapledurham House is less than 25 minutes by car. This "fine Elizabethan mansion" (The AA) has been used as a location in numerous film and TV productions -- most famously "The Eagle Has Landed", starring Michael Caine.
The on-site restaurant serves classic British dishes and uses fresh local produce. The hotel also has a deli where you can buy some of the ingredients used in the restaurant, and there is an outdoor seating area.
All 10 rooms are individually designed, with quality linen and large walk-in showers. There is free Wi-Fi throughout, and breakfast includes a choice of full English or cereals and toast.
