While many hotels in the UK claim to be the oldest, the 4-star Maids Head Hotel in Norwich has been open for more than 800 years. Its original features span the Tudor exterior, wood panelling in the Jacobean bar, and the feature fireplaces and exposed beams in some of the rooms.
The property is ideally located opposite Norwich Cathedral and within a short stroll of the historic Lanes, shops and restaurants, and the train station. The surrounding Tombland area is known for its cobbled streets, peaceful ambiance and pretty boutiques.
The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant serves more than 45 wines by the glass and uses British produce.
Upstairs, the bedrooms are spread haphazardly up various sets of staircases, across a number of adjoined Tudor houses. The lift only accesses some floors. There are iPads in the rooms to borrow and Wi-Fi is free. Queen Elizabeth I is thought to have stayed in the room now bearing her name -- it has an original headboard and exposed beams. Upgrade to the Ranworth Suite for a king-size 4-poster bed and a feature fireplace. Ask for a room in the historic part of the property if you want an older character. Other rooms are more modern.
