Housed in a 16th-century ivy-covered mansion, Whitley Hall Hotel is steeped in history: Mary Queen of Scots once (allegedly) stayed in the West Wing, and the property retains much of its Tudor architecture. The interior is filled with antiques, yet a scattering of contemporary furnishings bring a little modernity to the historic house.

The hotel sits less than 10 minutes’ drive from the M1 motorway and just 25 minutes from Sheffield. If you tire of wandering around the 20 acres of landscaped grounds, there’s the whole of the Peak District to explore -- walkers, climbers and cavers will love what the National Park has to offer. For a gentler day out, head for Chatsworth House, one of Britain’s most famous stately homes, an hour away by car.

The oak-panelled hotel restaurant boasts 2 AA Rosettes and specialises in traditional British cuisine -- look for dishes such as pressed pheasant and ham knuckle terrine, or North Sea cod with green olive mashed potatoes and baby leeks. It’s worth booking ahead for the popular roast dinner on Sundays. In summer, guests can eat in the gardens overlooking the lake, while cooler evenings can be spent in the cosy bar, which has an open fireplace and a more casual menu featuring burgers and salads.

The 32 individually styled bedrooms reflect the historic character of the hotel, and a few feature 4-poster beds. All offer free Wi-Fi and satellite TV. Upgrade to a Deluxe Room for lake views and a complimentary glass of port.
