The Hacienda Zorita Hotel & Spa is a wine hotel by the River Tormes in the Ribera del Duero, a region that is known for its wine. Once a Dominican monastery, the property was built in 1366, and Christopher Columbus is said to have stayed at the monastery prior to his famed voyage across the Atlantic. It was featured in The Daily Telegraph's 2015 guide to the world's best monastery hotels.
UNESCO-listed Salamanca, "the most graceful city in Spain" (Rough Guides), is 15 minutes' drive away. It is home to a historic university and cathedral. The village of Ledesma is a 20-minute drive from the hotel, past a Roman bridge. The hotel can arrange tours to destinations such as the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, 50 minutes' drive away, for an extra fee.
The restaurant, Zorita's Kitchen, uses cheese, olive oil, cured ham and other ingredients from the hotel's organic farm, which is 15 minutes away. There's also a bar for drinks and snacks, with a terrace for al fresco dining, and an airy Refectory, which has large tables for communal dining. There's a chapel with medieval frescos and an outdoor pool (summer only) on site, and guests can visit the hotel's vineyard for free (including tasting of three wines). The hotel's spa offers a range of treatments using local wine and olive oil, and yoga classes are available.
Modern interiors sit alongside local antiques in the comfortable Standard Rooms and Villas, which all have views of the river or vineyard. Villas also have private gardens.
