On the edge of Brockenhurst village, Balmer Lawn Hotel is one of the larger hotels in the New Forest National Park, with 54 rooms. It’s a peaceful spot, though -- ponies graze nearby, the Lymington River trickles past, and there are plenty of walking and cycling trails to choose from.
The hotel is almost a destination in itself -- a former 19th-century hunting lodge, it housed the Canadian army in World War II (secret D-Day landing documents were found during a recent renovation). Today, there’s plenty to keep guests entertained. There are two pools (one outdoor, one indoor), squash and tennis courts, and a spa with a range of treatments available (charges apply). Brockenhurst Manor Golf Club is a 5-minute drive away. Also worth a visit are the Beaulieu Motor Museum (a 15-minute drive), and the Exbury Gardens & Steam Museum (20 minutes by car).
In the evenings, the AA-Rosette Beresford’s restaurant serves “impressive” (The AA Restaurant Guide) fare, such as double baked salmon soufflé and beetroot cream, monkfish wrapped in parma ham, and chocolate and orange mousse cake. The terrace is open during fine weather, and a Sunday carvery is accompanied by live music until 3:30pm.
The 54 individually decorated rooms were recently refurbished -- expect views of the countryside and cricket pitch, and free WiFi. Some Superior Rooms have balconies, and there are four-poster rooms with views of the forest. Family rooms are available and there are DVDs, game consoles and games available to borrow. Dogs are welcome.
