Hidden in the Hope Valley, at the heart of the Peak District National Park, the 4-star Losehill House Hotel & Spa features gorgeous views of the surroundings from many of its windows. Add to that an award-winning restaurant and you have a really special spot.
The pretty villages of Castleton and Edale are a pleasant walk (60 and 90 minutes respectively), and there are plenty of other hikes in the area -- walk along the Roman bridleway to the Win Hill summit, for example, or up to Mam Tor. Further afield, Britain’s stateliest stately home, Chatsworth House, is a 30-minute drive, and medieval Haddon Hall is just a little further.
Back at the hotel, the 2 AA-Rosette Orangery Restaurant offers dishes such as pan fried scallops with pork belly and black pudding, Derbyshire lamb with a mini shepherd’s pie, and wild mushroom and spinach oatcake mille feuille with butternut squash purée. It’s “a wonderfully tranquil setting for some serious fine dining”, says The Times. There’s a spa with a heated pool, sauna and steam room -- treatments are available (charges apply). The outdoor hot tub is open from 7am-9pm and has “stunning views over the valley” (The AA Hotel Guide).
Upstairs, the 23 rooms are simply decorated in modern style -- you’ll find free WiFi, a DVD player and robes and slippers. Most of them have views of that rolling countryside -- upgrade to the Edale Suite for a separate living area, external access and a double standalone bath.
