Set alongside a lake within 22 acres of parkland, the Chilston Park hotel is a 17th-century former manor house in the heart of Kent. With its "fragrant landscape of gentle hills, fertile farmland, cultivated country estates and fruit-laden orchards," Kent "isn't described as the garden of England for nothing," says Lonely Planet. The hotel is in an ideal location from which to explore the area.
Chilston Park Hotel combines antiques, traditional furnishings and original features with contemporary comforts. The hotel's restaurant, Culpeper's, holds a 2-AA-Rosette rating, and uses ingredients sourced locally from coast and farm.
The AA says, "the kitchen deals in modern British cooking clearly rooted in the classics but with some inventive combinations". The menu focuses on classic English dishes with a 21st-century twist, such as Romney Salt Marsh lamb with wilted greens, vanilla purée and rosemary jus. Breakfast, afternoon tea and Sunday lunch are also available.
Canterbury, which "tops the charts for English cathedral cities" (Lonely Planet), is a 30-minute drive from the hotel. Explore the medieval city's narrow alleyways, riverside gardens and ancient city walls. The "fairy-tale stronghold" (Fodor's) of Leeds Castle, a favourite home of many medieval English queens, is 15 minutes' drive from Chilston Park. The Kent Downs -- an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty popular for walking, cycling and horse riding -- are a 20-minute drive from the hotel.
"Bedrooms are individual in design, some have four-poster beds and many have garden views," says The AA. There are 53 bedrooms, including seven feature bedrooms and three master suites. Rooms are set across the coach house, stables, cottage and manor house, and all have a flat-screen TV and complimentary Wi-Fi.
