The Neo-Gothic Ettington Park Hotel is a "romantic" and "quintessentially English" manor-house hotel (Red magazine), set in 40 acres of grounds in the picturesque Stour Valley. It holds four stars and has AA Inspectors' Choice status. The Grade I-listed property is brimming with history -- the estate is mentioned in the Domesday Book and there are ruins of a 12th-century church in the grounds. The exterior also featured in the 1963 film "The Haunting".
It is a 15-minute drive from Stratford-upon-Avon, where you can visit the birthplace of Shakespeare or see a play by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Warwick Castle, built by William the Conqueror, is 25 minutes' drive away and discounted tickets are available from the hotel. The hotel is also 20 minutes from the start of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile footpath, and half an hour's drive from Farnborough Hall, an 18th-century mansion that is managed by the National Trust.
The hotel's panelled Oak Room restaurant holds two AA Rosettes and its modern British food is "extremely good", says Fodor's. Guests can order elevenses and afternoon tea in the Grand Drawing Room, which has an ornate plaster ceiling. The hotel also has an indoor pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna and steam rooms.
Classic Rooms are contemporary in style. Executive Rooms are larger, and some are in the main manor and have period features. All rooms have free Wi-Fi and the in-room mini fridges are stocked with fresh milk.
