Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf & Spa is a 4-star property set in 300 acres on the border of Essex and Suffolk in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The AA Hotel Guide 2015 praises the hotel's "attractively decorated" rooms, "superb" spa and 300 acres of "undulating countryside with lakes and two golf courses".
The hotel is a member of the Classic British Hotels collection, and is 10 miles from historic Colchester and 18 miles from the county town of Suffolk, Ipswich. The grounds of the hotel were developed from a 120-acre apple farm in the Dedham Vale; this area was made famous by the paintings of one of 19th-century England’s foremost landscape artists, John Constable.
You can dine in the 2-AA-Rosette Lakes Restaurant, which serves modern British dishes and has panoramic views over the lakes and two golf courses. Executive Head Chef Alan Paton and his team won the national award for Young Restaurant Team of the Year 2014. We like the sound of the green pea soup with lemon curd goat's cheese, toasted almonds and pea shoots; the belly of pork with jerk beans, banana bacon jam and green cabbage, and the sticky toffee bacon doughnut served with maple walnut ice cream.
For hearty food dine in the Clubhouse, or the Lounge Bar and Peake Bistro serves sandwiches and smoothies, ideal for a post-workout pick-me-up.
There are 80 bedrooms over three floors, and some rooms have views of the rolling countryside and the lakes.
The hotel features two 18-hole championship golf courses, a spa, an indoor pool, a sanarium, a steam room, a Jacuzzi and a gym. There's also the on-site Pippin Shop, which is a treasure trove of handmade gifts, food and wine.
There's plenty to do in the area; Gainsborough’s House, a museum and gallery paying homage to English painter Thomas Gainsborough, is a 17-minute drive away in Sudbury. Colchester Zoo is a 30-minute drive away and the medieval village of Lavenham is 18 minutes away by car.
