More Room Types

"An excellent getaway choice" (Frommer's), Sherbrooke Castle is a baronial-style property set in the leafy suburbs of Pollokshields, a 15-minute drive from the south of Glasgow city centre. If you’re not looking for a city-centre stay, this is an exceptionally elegant option and is surprisingly affordable despite its grandeur.

Pollok Country Park, with its Highland Cattle and mountain biking trails, is only half an hour away on foot and Dumbreck train station is a 5-minute walk, with connections to Glasgow Central Station taking just six minutes.

The property was designed in 1896 by leading architect Alexander Thomson (who designed many of Glasgow’s most prominent buildings, including St Vincent Street Church), and the hotel still makes quite an impression with romantic turrets. It is a very tranquil setting -- "everything about this place sighs comfort", says Lonely Planet, although it can get busy on the weekends (it’s a popular wedding venue).

Guests can sample traditional haggis and whisky sauce at the hotel’s restaurant, where the menu showcases local produce in dishes such as venison casserole and oak-smoked haddock risotto. There's also a more casual all-day menu available in the lounge, and traditional afternoon tea is served daily (1-5pm). In the evenings, settle down with a Scotch in the bar and rub shoulders with locals.

Rooms are spread across the main castle, stable annexe and the more modern garden wing. All are elegant, but the high-ceilinged rooms in the main building have a more traditional look -- right down to the occasional 4-poster bed. Bathrooms are spacious and modern, and some have free-standing tubs as well as roomy walk-in showers. This is a historic property so there are no lifts, but free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

From the press:
  • "Bedrooms are the epitome of luxury and comfort and a large romantic suite occupies the castle's 'Sleeping Beauty' tower" -- Frommer's

  • "A study in elegance and grace, everything about this place sighs comfort" -- Lonely Planet

  • "The guest rooms are quirky, but most are very spacious" -- Fodor's
