Nestled 1,450 metres above sea level in the Ela National Park, “the Bellevue is not a hugely convenient hotel but, in many ways, that is part of its charm”, says House and Garden. For those looking to get away from it all, but also be spoilt with mountain views and easy access to the slopes and hiking trails, this is a well-priced option in notoriously expensive Switzerland.
Davos (the highest town in Europe) and the main Davos-Klosters ski area, are a 20-minute bus ride away. Rinerhorn is only 10 minutes away and is quieter (the T-bar ski lifts make it unpopular with snowboarders). While some may wish to be closer to the action, guests of the hotel receive a Davos Klosters card, with free access to select local buses, trains and cable cars in the area. This being Switzerland, the public transport is excellent.
Out of the ski season, the area is popular with golfers, hikers and mountain bikers. The Bellevue Wiesen was named one of the top-10 cycling hotels in the world in 2016 by Active Traveller Magazine, and has secure bike storage, bike hire and a cleaning area.
The alpine hotel dates back to 1873, but has been modernised throughout with free Wi-Fi, heated wooden floors and a stylish décor. It’s run by a Swiss-German couple and there are only 21 rooms spread over two floors. Most of them have more of those mountain views. Family rooms are available and dogs are welcome (extra charge applies). There is no lift, so the hotel may not suit those with mobility needs.
The breakfast buffet is the usual spread of bread, pastries, meat, cheese, and an assortment of teas -- make sure you get a table near the window. In the evenings, local meat and fish take centre stage.
