Husum, near the North Sea, is described as “the epitome of northern German lifestyle and culture” by Fodor’s and is known for being the centre of Germany’s wind energy industry. It’s also a place that dates back to the mid-13th century and it still retains much of its historic character. That’s true of the 5-star Geniesser Hotel Altes Gymnasium, which was once the local school.

The hotel features an impressive Gothic façade and a lobby area with a high wooden ceiling and grand staircase leading upstairs. The surroundings are peaceful, but it’s only a 5-minute walk to the harbour, the Nordsee Museum and the town’s shops, cafés and restaurants. Husum station is a 10-minute walk and the North Sea coast is 10 minutes away by car.

Back at the hotel, there’s a large spa with an impressive indoor pool, a hot tub, a steam room and a gym. Treatments can also be arranged (extra charge applies). Breakfast is served in a modern conservatory -- there’s a good continental buffet selection, including champagne.

The romantic Eucken restaurant is in the basement and serves gourmet fare accompanied by a vast wine list. It’s named after the German Nobel Prize winner Rudolf Eucken who was once a teacher at the school. The cosy Pauker lounge is also rumoured to have been the detention room.

The air-conditioned bedrooms are spacious and spread across the historic school building and newer Garden House annex (the latter of which has accessible Wi-Fi). Many rooms have a balcony or terrace.
