More Room Types

Wanderlust is a hip boutique hotel with 29 design-led rooms, surrounded by traditional shops in a quiet part of Little India. The 1920s building is a former school, updated with an industrial-style reception and a popular restaurant.

Described as “frenetic, messy and fun” by Lonely Planet, Little India gets even livelier on Sunday, when the local residents have a day off. This neighbourhood is not on the traditional tourist trail, but hotel guests get a passport notebook on check-in with recommendations for nearby shops and restaurants. The Tekka Centre has a good selection of food stalls alongside its wet market. Or head to Kampong Glam, a trendy Arab neighbourhood known for Malay restaurants, hipster bars and the Sultan Mosque. The hotel is halfway between Little India and Bugis MTR stops, and is 10 minutes’ walk from both.

Guests can laze in the Jacuzzi or soak up the sun on the terrace on the first floor. Breakfast is a continental buffet followed by a choice of yoghurt and fruit, pancakes or scrambled eggs with bacon or sausage. Cocotte, the hotel’s French bistro (closed Tuesday), does a good line in rustic dishes, such as beef bourguignon and steak frites, and doubles up as the hotel’s coffee shop, which is “immensely popular with locals”, says The Guardian.

Each of the floors was designed by a different company. Every bedroom has a Nespresso machine and a mini bar, stocked with free bottled water and soft drinks. Pantone rooms on the first floor are the cheapest option, and the smallest. They’re fine for a short stay, but have limited storage space. Each is lit in one vibrant colour, from shocking pink to electric blue. Styled in black and white, Mono rooms are the most relaxing option. The top floor is a Whimsical fantasyland, with treehouse- and spaceship-themed rooms. Beds are on a mezzanine platform, and aren’t suited to the less mobile.
