A true home away from home, the Coconut Waikiki is a great value pick in Honolulu’s most visited town. In an area dominated by sprawling resorts, this intimate hotel comes as a pleasant surprise. Hidden away by the Ala Wai Canal, the hotel is a quiet sanctuary in bustling Waikiki, yet it’s only five minutes on foot to the shops and restaurants on Kalakaua Avenue and 10 minutes to Waikiki Beach.
Bright and cheery rooms are unusually large for a boutique property and have apartmentlike amenities, including a private lanai (or terrace), free Wi-Fi and a kitchenette with a microwave and a wet bar (some also have mini fridges), plus complimentary bottled water, sunscreen and aloe vera. Suites are ideal for families with fold-out sofa beds and almost 500 square feet of space. Mountain View rooms have beautiful views of the Ko’olau Mountains in the distance, but they do overlook the road so can be noisy. For a more restful stay, opt for a City View room -- they face an adjacent apartment block but are much quieter -- or request a room on one of the higher floors.
Downstairs, there’s a small gym and a laundry room (you can buy detergent at the front desk), and you’ll find a dispenser of free coconut-flavored M&Ms plus coffee and pineapple tea in the lobby. There isn’t an on-site restaurant -- but enjoy complimentary continental breakfast, and then pop around the corner for a favorite beverage and treat at Starbucks. There is also a small on-site outdoor pool.
The waves at Waikiki Beach are good for surfing, and the breaks are gentle enough for beginners. Those with kids will prefer Duke Kahanamoku Beach, where trees provide shade on the sand and the water is calmer. If you have time, make the hike out to Diamond Head Beach, a remote spot below the cliffs to the east of Waikiki, for quiet sunbathing with a stunning backdrop. Runners can follow the path along the canal to the same spot, or head to Kapiolani Park, where you’ll find 130 acres of parkland and a dedicated jogging trail with aerobic exercise points.
