Set on the slopes of Northern Ireland's Holywood hills, the luxurious Culloden Estate and Spa overlooks Belfast Lough and the stunning County Antrim coastline. The hotel was built in 1876 as the palace of the Bishops of Down, and took two and a half years to complete -- most of the stone came from Scotland by boat and was then delivered to the estate by horse and cart. Culloden's setting is rural, surrounded by 12 acres of mature gardens and woodland, yet Belfast's city centre is only seven miles away.
The North Down Coastal Path can be accessed within a 5-minute walk from the hotel. The path leads to the National Trust area of Ballymacormick Point, where you may be able to spot grey seals offshore. Belfast is easily reachable; the Cultra train station is on the grounds, and there is also a bus station right by the hotel. The luxurious spa has eight treatment rooms, two pre- and post-treatment relaxation rooms, a Zest juice bar, a lounge area and access to all of the other facilities of the Health Club.
Dining options include the Mitre Restaurant for breakfast, dinner, afternoon tea and Sunday lunch; the Cultra Inn bar and restaurant; and the Crozier Lounge, where guests can enjoy a Hendrick’s gin afternoon tea, as well as a selection of cocktails and hot drinks. The Gothic-style Mitre Restaurant has a gourmet dining menu using local produce and herbs from the hotel’s garden, while the Cultra Inn serves classic Irish fare.
Some bedrooms and suites have views over the hotel gardens and Belfast Lough, and all come with complimentary bathrobes, slippers and an iPod docking station. Junior Suites, State Suites and Palace Suites are larger than Superior Rooms, and both the State and Palace Suites have marble baths. As an additional quirky touch, both the Junior and Palace Suites include a rubber Hastings duck, which guests are encouraged to take away with them and photograph on their travels around the world.
