At the heart of Oslo -- both geographically and culturally -- since 1900, the luxurious, 5-star Hotel Continental is a great base for exploring the city.

Oslo is a walkable city, but even so the Hotel Continental’s location is a bonus. It’s opposite the National Theatre, close to the Royal Palace and gardens, and the restaurants and shops of Aker Brygge are just over 5 minutes’ walk away. Other easy-to-reach attractions include the Akershus Fortress and The Nobel Peace Center. A visit to Bygdøy peninsula -- a 7-minute walk to the harbour followed by a 15-minute ferry trip -- offers the Viking Ship Museum, the Norwegian Folk Museum and the Norwegian Maritime Museum.

The hotel’s Vienna-themed Theatercaféen is described as“an Oslo institution” by Fodor’s -- its walls are covered with portraits of the authors, actors, painters and composers who have reportedly visited. The secondrestaurant, the grandly decorated Eik Annen Etage, offers fine dining, while the lobby bar, Dagligstuen, offers coffee and pastries as well as the usual wine and spirits -- and has the added attraction of a selection of Edvard Munch prints on the wall. There’s also a 24-hour gym.

The hotel’s 155 rooms look out over the Oslofjord, or have courtyard views. The Daily Telegraph describes them as a “blend of English country-house and Nordic cool” and rates the “big comfy beds”. Each room has been individually decorated -- all feature international television, an in-room safe and free WiFi.
