The Moevenpick Hotel Hamburg is a one-off -- an early 20th-century water tower in the leafy Sternschanzenpark (public park) that has been transformed into a state-of-the-art hotel, just two minutes' walk from the nearest U-Bahn station.
Hamburg is a confident city that has always looked out across the waters to its trading partners as much as it has looked inward to Berlin or Bavaria. Its heart and soul is the harbour area and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Speicherstadt, a district dominated by 7-storey red-brick warehouses built in the late 1800s. Head to Mönckebergstrasse for the best shopping in the city, and the huge Kunsthalle Hamburg art gallery for everything from Old Masters through to modern and contemporary work by artists such as David Hockney, Bruce Nauman, Andy Warhol, Yves Klein, Rebecca Horn and Tracey Emin.
The hotel's restaurant is open from 6am for breakfast until 11pm, with a special "late riser" brunch until 2pm on weekends – ideal for the hard-partying crowd. It is located in a beautiful glass outbuilding with park views and a terrace, and serves international and Swiss cuisine, with a special Go Healthy menu of low-calorie dishes. The Cave Bar, which serves creative cocktails, is located in the vaults of the old water tower. There is also a fitness and wellness centre with a sauna and relaxation room. Extensive sporting options are available in the park, including boules, beach volleyball, cycling, boating and swimming.
The hotel has 226 rooms on 16 floors, with the rooms on the upper floors offering "amazing" views, according to Fodor's. Standard Rooms (Queen, Double or Twin) are on the lower floors and come with air conditioning, flat-screen LCD TV, mini bar, free Wi-Fi and park views. Upgrade to a Superior Room on a higher floor for more extensive views, or a Premium Room, which includes a Senseo coffeemaker. There are also large Junior Suites and two vast Tower Suites on the 17th floor with panoramic 360-degree views of the city.
