With its fantastic central location just off Merrion Square and its gorgeous 19th-century Italianate façade, the O’Callaghan Davenport Hotel certainly makes a strong first impression. This grand 4-star hotel was formerly a prayer hall -- now it’s a comfortable hotel, home to 103 rooms and 12 suites.
This location, in the heart of Georgian Dublin, can’t be beat. The hotel lies just a short distance from Trinity College and the capital’s main museums (including The National Museum of Ireland’s Natural History and Archaeology branches and the National Gallery). St. Stephen’s Green, Grafton Street and Dublin Castle are all within a 15-minute walk.
Back at the hotel, Lanyon’s Restaurant serves up a full Irish or continental buffet breakfast from 7am (7:30am on weekends). The dinner menu is fairly traditional, with Irish classics such as slow-cooked Irish stew and sweet-cured bacon chop with mustard mash and buttered cabbage, as well as 28-day aged rib-eye steak. The wood-paneled President’s Bar offers lighter bites such as steak sandwiches and seafood chowder. Choose to work it all off at the 24-hour gym, or just sink into one of the bar’s sofas and order another martini.
Rooms and suites have a classic finish, with Wi-Fi access (extra charges apply) and tea and coffee-making facilities. Some are on the small side, so upgrade for more space, and it’s worth requesting south-side rooms for their views of the city or Merrion Square.
