Tucked between the designer shops and upscale restaurants of lower Manhattan, the Smyth Tribeca has been a celebrity favorite ever since it opened in 2009, hosting everyone from Jake Gyllenhaal to Kourtney Kardashian.
Located in the trendy cobblestoned neighborhood of Tribeca (which the likes of Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jay-Z call home), Smyth attracts a mixed crowd of business travellers, trendsetters and families. SoHo shopping and West Village cafés are a 10-minute walk away, or jump on the subway (Chambers Street is the nearest) for popular attractions such as Rockefeller Center, Times Square and Central Park.
Inside, this bijou hotel is a glossy mix of minimalism and retro detailing (sleek tiled walls, vintage toys, alarm clocks and radios), that combines to make a "comfortable place to stay," notes Condé Nast Traveller.
Themed around bull fighting and done up with matador capes, the Toro Lounge is a sultry mix of ebony and scarlet. Order cocktails here from unpretentious Helmut Lang-uniformed staff or stop for drinks in the more relaxed Smyth Bar on the ground floor. The Restaurant at Smyth is currently undergoing light refurbishment.
Sound-proofed rooms are trendily modern, with striking charcoal walls and crimson armchairs, white luxe linens and soft throws. Standard rooms are small (not unusual in New York), but some of the larger ones come with roomy balconies and city views. There are walk-in showers with rainfall heads in the bathrooms, and top-end rooms have bathtubs as well.
