For those looking to get away from it all, the Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo fits the bill. The resort is located on the Samana peninsula, an area not yet overrun by developers.
The secluded feel is also due to its location. It’s about a 45-minute ride over somewhat rough terrain from the nearest airport in Samana and there are no direct flights from the U.S.
Although it can be a challenge to get there, the tradeoff is one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Think calm and clear waters with soft powdery sand. The dearth of hotels and activity in the area is a boon to guests here. The property Is surrounded on either side by heavily wooded areas, making it feel miles away from civilization.
Within the grounds, there are plenty of modern-day activities including snorkelling, scuba diving and kayaking. There’s also a main pool with a separate children’s area. A nice bonus for families is the water park area where the younger set will probably want to spend their day.
This is not the typical party atmosphere of most all-inclusives. There are no daytime DJs, pool games or loudly touted organized activities. The emphasis here is on relaxation. Night time turns up a bit with an on-site dance club and nightly shows and music.
