The Bell is a cosy boutique hotel, which The Independent praises for its "quirky and luxurious" bedrooms and hails as one of the 50 best country pubs. This former coaching inn, with its log fire, beamed ceilings and eclectic decor, was also listed by The Times as one of its 20 Best Pubs with Rooms.
Set in the quaint village of Ticehurst, The Bell is close to Pashley Manor Gardens, and Bewl Lake is less than five miles away through the East Sussex countryside. The traditional seaside town of Brighton is 29 miles away and Eastbourne, recorded as Britain's sunniest town in 2012, is 20 miles from the hotel. The nearest airport is Gatwick, which is 26 miles from the hotel.
House and Garden ranks The Bell in its list of 100 Hip Hotels for under £100, and it's little wonder when you see the playful décor inside. From French horns as urinals and a silver birch tree in every bedroom to a stuffed squirrel in a rocking chair, this pub with rooms is definitely out of the ordinary. In addition to the pub and restaurant, there's a rustic snug, complete with log fire.
The seven individually styled bedrooms are bursting with character. The bathrooms themselves, featuring roll-top baths, mismatched tiles and more, are an experience in themselves. The Bell takes it up a notch with the four Lodges outside, which feature quirky interiors including a nautical theme and a wall of vintage-style clocks. Each room has an individual name -- such as Love Nest and Between the Lines -- to match its décor. We particularly liked the pretty flower installation above the bed in the Pour L'Amour lodge.
