Just outside St. Jean Gate -- the gateway to the Old City sits the modern, yet homey Quebec City Marriott Downtown. It overlooks the Place d'Youville, a lively square that’s dotted with open-air markets on summer weekends and hosts an ice rink during the winter months.
This spot is excellent for sightseeing -- the Old Port is a 15-minute walk, and museums like the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec, and the Musée de la Civilisation are both within walking distance. Top restaurants, such as Initiale ("one of the best in the entire province," according to Frommer’s) on the Rue Saint Pierre and Le Continental for classic flambés on the Rue Saint Louis, are also close at hand.
It may belong to a big chain, but the hotel itself isn’t large (there are just more than 100 rooms), and staff go the extra mile, creating a personal atmosphere. The on-site restaurant is good for French bistro food, if a little pricey. Breakfast here is popular and can get busy, so bear this in mind if you’re short on time. A small gym on the lower level is fitted out with new equipment, and fresh fruit and towels are provided.
Rooms are classically Marriott, with crisp linens and contemporary design. Standard rooms aren’t huge (it’s a city hotel), but they’re comfortable. A few do have good views -- some as far reaching as the St. Lawrence River and all have a mini fridge. Guests staying in Concierge rooms also get access to the cozy Concierge Lounge on the lobby mezzanine floor (closed Saturdays), where there’s free non-alcoholic drinks and snacks.
