The Bishopstrow Hotel & Spa is a beautiful ivy-clad country house in the Wiltshire countryside. Dating back to 1817, it sits alongside the River Wylye in 27 acres of picturesque grounds, which are ideal for a romantic stroll. Bath, Salisbury, Stonehenge and Longleat Safari and Adventure Park are all within easy reach.
The award-winning Mulberry restaurant overlooks the sun terrace and features locally sourced produce prepared by chef Andy Britton, who trained under Albert Roux and Michael Caines. His upmarket fare includes dishes such as beetroot risotto with mascarpone and parmesan, Wiltshire lamb with gruyere gratin, and sea bass with curried mussel and mushroom veloute.
The hotel has 32 bedrooms, all of a good size with more of the charm and period features so prominent in the rest of the house. The Deluxe Rooms are the largest, with separate sitting areas and outside access. Dogs are welcome (extra charge applies) and there is a welcome gift in the room and children's high-tea menu (served 5-7pm) for any little ones.
But "it's the spa that put Bishopstrow House back on the map", says Elle and The Good Spa Guide (which awarded it four bubbles) concurs. There are four therapy rooms (including a Rasul mud therapy room) plus a sauna, a steam room and a Jacuzzi.
Outside, play on the indoor and outdoor tennis courts, enjoy a game of croquet or cricket on the lawns or catch trout from the banks of the River Wylye (the kitchen will even cook your catch for you). There are also a multitude of activities that can be arranged on site on request, including archery, clay pigeon shooting and the rather bizarre duck herding (advance warning required).
