Modern day guests of The High Line Hotel would find it hard to believe the area surrounding the red brick Gothic building was once an apple orchard. Then seminary dormitories, the property witnessed the private acreage evolve into a bustling neighborhood of Manhattan named for the original Georgian-style estate. Today, Chelsea is one of the centers of the art world with over 200 galleries in the neighborhood while the dorms became a Federal Historic Landmark, and a boutique hotel.
Despite its urban location, the hotel grounds are home to three private gardens and the most of the architectural details have been maintained. Original pine floors and stained glass windows blend with contemporary industrial decorations like Edison light bulb lamps, unexpected textures like cobalt velvet couches and picture-less gilded frames against exposed brick walls.
All 60 guest rooms are different sizes but all have high ceilings with crown molding, locally-sourced furniture and antique rugs on hardwood floors. Large windows let in plenty of natural light in addition to views of the High Line Park or gardens below. All accommodations have fresh floral arrangements and feature free Wi-Fi, Jawbone mini jam boxes, mini bars and flat-screen televisions, some also include decorate fireplaces. Connecting the past with the future, rewired 1930s rotary phones are found on the marble bedside table in each room and the retro Tivoli radios sync with guests’ iPods.
Visitors can start their mornings with espresso served by baristas at the antique antique Citroën H-Van parked inside one of the gardens. In the afternoons, guests are invited to traditional Italian aperitivi – pre-dinner drinks – at the on-site restaurant’s candlelit courtyard before a full dinner is served inside or alfresco. To explore Manhattan’s West Side, guests can take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary Shinola bicycle and helmet lending program. For a more intense workout, they have free access the nearby Equinox Sports Club.
