Dartington Hall is a 14th-century manor set in 800 acres of manicured gardens on the banks of the River Dart in Devon. It's a destination in its own right, with on-site cinema The Barn and the 2-AA-Rosette White Hart Restaurant.
One of the great things about this hotel is the profits support the charitable programmes of The Dartington Hall Trust, a charity that aims to build more resilient communities. The hotel hosts events such as the Ways with Words Festival 2015, where readers can meet authors and hear guest speakers.
The property was once home to Henry VIII's wives Catherine Howard and Katherine Parr. References to this era remain, such as the Great Hall, which The Guardian says is an "enchanting scene". The award-winning White Hart restaurant overlooks the property's Grade II-listed gardens and features fare from local producers. Highlights include the line-caught mackerel escabeche, local venison with cranberries, and Denbury lamb rump.
All En-Suite Rooms are positioned around the medieval courtyard and overlook the grounds. Rooms have free Wi-Fi.
Dartington Hall is a 10-minute drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park -- a place of "honey-tinged moors" and "moss-smothered boulders in woods of twisted trees", says Lonely Planet. Dartmoor was one of the filming locations for Steven Spielberg's "War Horse". Other nearby places to visit include Exeter and Plymouth, and the towns on the English Riviera: Brixham, Torquay and Paignton.
