Situated in stately Salamanca, the Hotel Wellington dates back to 1952 and is a majestic property with stained glass windows and a distinguished reputation.
Trading on its 5-star credentials and top-notch dining, it's the go-to hotel for the Spanish monarchy -- past guests also include the likes of Gene Kelly and Matt Damon. The hotel sits opposite Retiro Park and is a 20-minute walk from the Prado and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
In-house restaurant Kabuki holds a Michelin star for its carefully prepared Japanese cuisine, which the Michelin Guide says is "always superbly presented". Try the maki rolls and nigiri made from corn fungus and Galacian cheese. For typical Basque cuisine, there's the fine-dining Goizeko restaurant, where the specialties include calamari cooked in squid ink and seafood risotto.
Breakfast is bountiful, taken in the genteel dining room, it offers and impressive range of hot and cold dishes, regional specialties, international favourites and even sparkling wine.
A new outdoor pool and Jacuzzi -- complete with sun deck and bar -- provide welcome respite from the heat in summer months. There is also a small wellness centre with a gym and spa treatments available.
The spacious standard rooms have been classically finished, with marble bathrooms, and pricier rooms have been recently refurbished. Suites come with private balconies and the huge 2-bedroom Presidential Suite has its own private Techno gym.
