High in the Colorado Rockies sits the chateau-style Lodge & Spa at Cordillera, offering guests an elegant Wild West experience with breathtaking views from every room and an abundance of outdoor activities. Local 5280 Magazine calls it a "true escape" and says it’s "the forget-your-worries-because-you’re-on-top-of-the-world feeling that makes the lodge so compelling."
What you get up to really depends on the season. In winter, take a horse-drawn sleigh ride or go skiing at Beaver Creek and Vail, where you'll find some of the most challenging slopes in the country. There is a complimentary shuttle to the hotel’s ski-in/ski-out club houses -- spaces are limited, so book in advance.
In the warmer months, explore the Gore Range's bike and hiking trails, try your hand at fly-fishing, play golf at one of the three courses (one designed by US Open Champ Hale Irwin) or embrace your inner adrenaline-junkie with white-water rafting. The hotel's spa is worth a visit all year-round, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the mountains and heated indoor and outdoor pools.
The 56 bedrooms are spacious (the smallest are 430 square feet) and some feature a patio or balcony with panoramic views over the Vail Valley. The Loft Suite has two floors and can happily accommodate a family of four.
On site, there are two dining options -- the gourmet Mirador for Mediterranean fare and the Irish pub, Grouse on the Green. The bright lights of Edwards, where you'll find numerous restaurants and a lively nightlife scene, are only a 10-minute drive away.
