Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina is a 4-star hotel in downtown Reykjavik. It overlooks Mount Esja and the city’s main dockyard, and is a 2-minute stroll from the Old Harbour for whale-watching excursions. The cathedral, Saga Museum and Harbour House (the Reykjavik Art Museum’s pop art gallery) are all within walking distance, as are the restaurants and bars around Laugavegur street in the main shopping district.

Slippbarinn, the hotel’s restaurant and bar, is a popular spot -- apparently even Ryan Gosling once stopped by for a nightcap. Choose from dishes like pork belly in a steamed bun, fish of the day and topped flatbreads to share. A daily Happy Hour provides cut-price cocktails, draft beer and wine and the atmosphere is lively -- guests can request music from a stack of records on the bar. In the morning, the breakfast buffet is stocked with plenty of hearty fare, including a selection of breads, cheeses, smoked salmon, eggs and skyr (Icelandic strained yoghurt).

The hotel also has a gym with free weights, a treadmill, yoga mats and a small climbing wall. Wi-Fi is free for the first 24 hours.

Rooms have black-and-white photos of the dockyard on the walls, mismatched furniture and bathrooms with frosted glass doors. Some are small and storage is minimal too, with hooks and hanging bars instead of wardrobes -- packing light is recommended. Families can be accommodated in Studio rooms, which sleep four to six in bunk beds. Harbour-side rooms are quieter than those facing the road, and the ones on the top floor have "excellent sea views", says Lonely Planet.

Please note: A new accommodation wing is due to open in mid-May and renovations are currently ongoing.

From the press:
  • "Captivating art, cool nautical-chic design elements, up-to-the-second mod cons and clever ways to conserve space make small rooms winners overall" -- Lonely Planet
  • "The décor's fun, with flashes of Icelandic humour everywhere … Think minimalist meets Monty Python" -- Men's Health
