A Relais & Chateaux hotel, Summer Lodge is "a country house hotel of sumptuous, indeed fabulous, excess" says The Independent. The pretty Georgian property overlooks a 600-acre deer park and has an unlikely heritage -- it was remodelled in 1893 by the acclaimed writer (and architect), Thomas Hardy. Today, there's a pretty spa, indoor pool, award-winning restaurant and "smart, effective" service (Michelin Guide).
Named in the Tatler Restaurant Guide in 2013, the 3-AA-Rosette restaurant is the hotel's showpiece. The dining room may be full of embroidered pastels and floral decor, but the food is remarkably unfussy. Be sure to try chef Steven Titman’s signature dish of roast lamb and shepherd's pie. A highly regarded, well-stocked wine cellar (described by The Daily Telegraph as “hard to beat”) and a lengthy list of whiskies and cognacs rounds off the experience to make dinner here a real treat.
There are just 24 rooms -- some in the main manor and a few in neighbouring thatched cottages -- and each is prettily decorated with floral prints, a profusion of patterned carpets and gilt-framed pictures. All have huge, comfy beds, and some have private terraces. Homemade shortbread, scented candles and hot water bottles in the winter are thoughtful extras.
The pretty grounds, dotted with sculptures, are also home to a bountiful produce garden, croquet lawn, giant chess and an impressive water feature -- not to mention a swimming pool and tennis courts. You're also within easy reach of a range of Dorset's local attractions including the neighbouring Melbury Estate & Deer Park, Furleigh Estate vineyard, Weymouth and the Medieval town of Sherbourne.
