Set in 200 acres of parkland on the outskirts of Southport, Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa is a sprawling 4-star property. It’s a convenient countryside retreat, a 35 minute-drive along the coast from the bright lights of Liverpool, and is less than 10 miles from sandy Crosby Beach, where you’ll find 100 of Anthony Gormley’s mesmeric cast-iron statues looking out over Liverpool Bay.
The popular golf club buzzes with activity, thanks to a championship 18-hole course that winds through pot bunkers, woodland and a number of tricky water hazards. Greener golfers can test their skills at the PGA practice facilities and a challenging links-style par-3 course provides variety. When hunger strikes, there are two restaurants to choose between. Steak, hearty classics and golf course views are par for the course at L|Thirty Seven, where ingredients are locally sourced and portions are large. For more casual fare, including bar food, sandwiches and jacket potatoes, there’s the 19th Hole. Or stop off at the Java Lounge for Illy coffee, snacks and wines by the glass.
Guests can take a dip in the indoor pool, unwind in the health club sauna or workout at the gym. Head upstairs to don a fluffy robe and slippers and sample the well-reviewed spa, which offers massages, facials and rasul mud treatments, as well as a separate thermal suite with a further sauna, steam room and foot Jacuzzis.
Contemporary rooms all have air conditioning and free Wi-Fi, and the higher categories offer complimentary bottled water and views over the golfing greens.
