Upcoming Holiday Events in NYC

Holiday season is upon us, and New York is greeting the chillier weather with festive events and activities around every corner. Check out these upcoming holiday events, many of them free, to take part in the Christmas cheer:

  • Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: See the towering balloon creatures and waving Santa on Thursday, Nov. 22. This year is the parade’s 86th anniversary, and more than 50 million people are expected to watch the broadcast.
  • Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting: The world’s most famous Christmas tree lights up on Nov. 28. More than 30,000 lights and a Swarovski star will grace the 80-foot Norway Spruce. While you’re there, take a spin on the Rockefeller ice-skating rink or see the famous Rockettes’ holiday show at nearby Radio City Music Hall.
  • Holiday window displays: Starting in mid-November, stores including Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s create elaborate holiday scenes in their windows. These displays take the whole year to plan and command huge budgets.
  • Holiday markets: Sip apple cider and check off Christmas lists at the Union Square Holiday Market and Holiday Shops at Bryant Park. New York magazine features a full list of markets, bazaars and gift festivals.

While in town, take advantage of New York hotel deals and Broadway deals -- which also make a good Christmas gift.
