Tunisia has been modestly thought of as a budget break destination for well over the last 20 years. Its North African shores get year-round sun, and with a flight time of less than three hours, Tunisia is fast becoming a destination for a cheap winter holiday that is even more convenient than its Red Sea counterparts.
The most widely known beach resort is Hammamet. Regarded as the Tunisian St. Tropez, it is home to white sandy beaches as well as cheap eateries, shisha (water-pipe) cafes and bars. The city has a traditional Old Town -- or Medina -- selling traditional souvenirs of leather, ceramic and brass. Other beach resorts include Sousse and Port el Kantoui, both commonly served by Monastir airport, which is less than an hour’s drive away.
If lazing on a beach isn’t your thing, the Sahara Desert offers a plethora of off-beat experiences. Tours include Jeep safaris, dune-buggy-riding and camel trekking. The Mediterranean Sea is home to competitively priced water sports, such as paragliding, jet skiing and banana boats. As with the souks and bazaars of the Medina, water sport companies are inclined to lower their prices if you are prepared to haggle.
