Planning the Perfect Costa Rica Vacation

Costa Rica has something for everyone -- breathtaking wildlife, luxurious resorts, fascinating culture and fun outdoor activities. But travellers who don’t have time to visit both coasts of this Central American country will have to make a decision before planning their trip. Visit the established and often luxurious towns on the Pacific Coast? Or experience the quaint and welcoming villages on the Caribbean Coast? Here are some things to think about before making a decision:

Pacific Coast

  • With large European and North American expat populations, visitors will find upscale shopping, concrete sidewalks and luxurious resorts.
  • Beautiful beaches line the Pacific Coast, including Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula. This area is known as the Gold Coast and is the driest and most reliably sunny region of the country. That’s partly why its beaches tend to get a bit more crowded, and hotels fill up quickly.
  • Playa Grande on the Pacific Coast is home to the leatherback turtle -- the largest turtle in the world.
  • This family-friendly area offers a comfortable vacation to less adventurous travellers.

Caribbean Coast

  • Travellers will find quaint villages on the Caribbean Coast with luxury lurking in corners here and there. Known for its eco-tourism, this region of Costa Rica is home to dirt roads and open-air restaurants.
  • The perfect setting for travellers looking to surf, relax and immerse themselves in the Costa Rican culture, the Caribbean Coast tends to attract backpackers and environmentally conscious individuals.
  • With several upscale hotels dotting the coast, this is a great setting for people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives.
  • Costa Rica’s sloth sanctuary is on the Caribbean Coast near the town of Limon. Observe and admire these peaceful creatures at the sanctuary, or on the one-hour guided tour through the bayous of the Estrella River Delta.
