Rome is the national capital or Italy, and its largest city. Located in the Lazio region of central Italy, it is the third most visited tourist destination in the European Union. You may go to try an authentic cappuccino, slice of pizza or bowl of pasta, but Rome is so much more.
The historic centre of Rome is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Central Rome is still obviously Renaissance and Baroque in character. You can see this history in the many movies and shows that have been filmed here, such as Ben Hur, HBO's Rome, Cleopatra and The Passion of the Christ.
Rome's main airport is the Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport, more commonly known as Fiumicino Airport (FCO). If you are not fond of flights to Rome, you can always take the train – due to its central location, Rome is a principal railway centre for central Italy.
Rome has many tourist attractions to consider visiting, thanks to its lengthy history. You can take some time to visit the largest Christian church in the world, Saint Peter's Basilica, or admire Michelangelo's works at the Sistine Chapel, or take in some older works at the Colosseum or the Pantheon.
In addition to all of these tourist attractions, The Vatican City is also located in Rome. This independent, sovereign state is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. Keep in mind if you want to enter, you and all of your belongings will have to pass through X-ray scanners.
While in Rome, it is recommended that you take the metro system around the city. You can also ride the extensive bus and tram network around the city. There are not many taxis, and traffic congestion is horrendous, due to the radial street pattern. Many areas have Limited Traffic Zones due to chronic congestion problems.
Rome has a typical Mediterranean climate, with the most comfortable moths being from April through June and from mid-September to October. October is the best month for sunny and warm days.
