It’s Friday night and summer in the city. The evening air is thick with humidity, high on promise and as I soon discover, rich in talent. I confidently stroll to The Royal Alexandria Theatre, home to the much heralded musical “Kinky Boots” and on this night, a bevy of single Torontonians.

The setup: Mirvish Productions is hosting a one-night only singles mixer and a meet-and-greet with the cast. A quasi follow up of sorts to their well-orchestrated and highly successful “Once” date night. Armed with liquid courage courtesy of the two drink vouchers paired with my ticket, the goal this evening is to infiltrate the scene, shed all shyness and suppress my inner skeptic in pursuit of a potential match.

Somewhere between the first cocktail, mingling with female patrons and intermission, I lose my inhibitions and find a sense of community. This is a feeling not too dissimilar from the story’s plot, where a boy named Charlie returns home and reluctantly inherits the family’s failing shoemaking factory, only to give it new life with the help of a cabaret performing drag queen named Lola in in need of some sturdy stilettos.

With the help of Irene, a lovely divorcee and devoted patron of the arts who has made it her mission to play match-maker for me, we navigate the crowd and hobnob with the uber-talented cast members.

While my iPhone now has a couple of new contacts loaded, I knew full well going into this that finding a match might not be entirely realistic, but it doesn’t matter. After all, this “musical celebration is about the friendships we discover, and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind.”

With pop diva Cyndi Lauper penned lyrics running through my head – a common side effect of attending musicals – and with an ironic air of storybook lore, the clock has literally struck midnight and it’s time for this publisher turned social experiment dater to exit stage left.

Travelzoo Tip: “Kinky Boots” was recently extended through March 6 at The Royal Alexandria Theatre. Travelzoo members can book orchestra seats for all Dec. 8 – Jan. 29 performances at up to 30% off.
