Why You Should Head to Houston this Spring Break
If you dropped the ball planning this year’s spring break vacation, not to worry — we’ve found a unique last-minute destination the whole family will enjoy. Here’s everything you need to know about the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Attending the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is like visiting Disney World’s country cousin. This year, the event takes place from Feb. 22 to Mar. 18.
It commences each year with the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, a 3-day event in which over 250 teams compete to serve the best brisket, chicken and ribs.
If Bar-B-Que isn’t your thing, you can find a host of other delicious food options on the carnival grounds like corn dogs, curly fries, nachos and pretty much anything fried and/or on a stick.
You’ll also find a variety of amusement park activities at the carnival, from relatively tame swing rides…
…to exhilarating, adrenaline-pumping rides.
If you’re traveling with small children, The Junction provides more kid-friendly games and rides.
It even has a petting zoo with a wide variety of animals, including pigs, goats, llamas, miniature donkeys and more.
Each night throughout the rodeo season, concerts are held in NRG stadium.
This year’s lineup ranges from country music icon Garth Brooks…
…to 2018 Grammy-winning Best New Artist Alessia Cara.
Your concert ticket also gives you access to the rodeo competitions that night, including bull-riding, bareback riding, barrel racing, chuck wagon races…
…and my personal favorite, mutton bustin’ – an event in which 5- and 6-year-old contestants attempt to hold on to a sheep as long as possible as the animal races across the arena.
So, if you’re ready to experience this truly unique event pack your best pair of blue jeans and head to Houston for a Spring Break the whole family will enjoy.
