Update (9:15 am CT Oct. 19): The $491 roundtrip fares appear to be gone. The lowest fares available are now $690-$800.

Fares to China typically go for around $1,000 roundtrip. With this unadvertised fare from United, fly to Shanghai from Los Angeles for about half price at $491 roundtrip.

Travelzoo test bookers found this deal on select date pairs from Oct. 27 - Dec. 10 when using the "Flexible dates" search.

Here's how to find this fare:

Click here for United's Shanghai special of $315 each way
Enter LAX for the departure city and PVG for the destination
Select travel dates (try stays of seven to ten nights) then click "Search"
Click the "Flexible dates" tab on the search results page to find the $491.20 roundtrip fares
The final price including tax is $535.90
